One thing I learnt from this survey is that people were rather hesitant to tell about the website they used. Most avoided question three altogether, at most giving one answer. There was also hostility towards the idea of sharing fashion trends with friends, as seen from question 5.

In the end, my group and I decided to use the Metal Webzine for our future assignment. We then performed some content research into other web magazines with a similar

Web Regulatory Bodies

1) Copyright

Copyright is a legal right created by the law of a country that grants the creator of an original work exclusive rights for its use and distribution. This is usually only for a limited time.

A webzine must work within the parameters of international copyright. This is especially important if the webzine is profit based, as this can lead to court battles.

2) Data Protection Act

The Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA) is an Act of Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which defines UK law on the processing of data on identifiable living people. It is the main piece of legislation that governs the protection of personal data in the UK.

Our webzine must respect the Data Protection Act, as any personal information not given with the owner’s permission can be held against the webzine’s owner in a court of law.

3) Disability Access

About 20 percent of people in the UK do not access to the web as easy because their disability prevents them from accessing the web by using the same technology than non-disabled people or understanding the communicated information.

Web accessibility aims to improve access for people who have:

  • Blindness
  • Mobility disabilities
  • Hearing impairment and deafness

The webzine needs to be made with these problems in mind. There is very little a visual based media genre such as a webzine can do to make itself more accessible to someone with visual impairments, other then having as much audio content as possible. People with hearing impairments and deafness should be fine, providing there are not many audio and video clips. The webzine can also be as user friendly as possible, to cater to those with reduced mobility.

Assignment one was challenging, as it was all new material that I did not have much expertise, which I appreciated. However, this was offset by the trouble I had getting my group to do anything.

Ideas for Web-zines

100http://consequenceofsound.net

This is a basic web-zine, reporting and commenting on all recent news and update in the music industry, it does not concentrate onto any artist or genre.

http://www.skrillex.com

This is a pretty much Skrillex and EDM concentrated web-zine, the updates and posts are mainly entered around Skrillex.

http://9gag.com

This is a comedy web-zine, different to the others by the fact it allows its members to submit the posts instead of one group or single person running the web-zine.

These are excellent examples of the formats needed for the web-zines we have been researching. A lot of visuals are needed for a younger audience, bright colors, even for the metal related site, and a minimum of text.

Pitch Research

In this lesson, we were shown various marketing pitches form Dragon’s Den. We took notes (which we submitted to Lillian). All of the pitches we saw, failed, due to a variety of reason. Some failed due to not presenting well, despite having a decent looking business proposition. Some presented really well, but initially withheld important information from the dragons,
